PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS

A blue iris for you!
Since the families of most of us are Christian and some of us consider ourselves to be Christian as well as Buddhist, Blue Iris Sangha has integrated elements of Christian practice into times when it was necessary to have a funeral service. The following version of the Prayer of St. Francis is especially suited for such occasions since it expresses so clearly elements of practice common to both Christian and Buddhist traditions.

Lord, make us instruments of your Peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, healing;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not seek so much
to be comforted as to comfort,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,
in forgiving that we are forgiven,
and in dying to our selfishness
that we are born into life eternal.
